The Secret to Taking Control of Your Life

Would you like to have power over your own life?

Would you like to create whatever situation you want and not be tossed around by the whims of others?

There is a way to have that control. A way to make your own decisions the way you want to make them. It’s like a switch you can flip inside of you.

A switch that can change the entire course of your life if you flip it…

...But there’s a catch...

It hurts.

Now it only hurts for a little bit and then you are empowered and in control forever. But I’m not going to lie to you and say this feels good when you first do it.

But it’s up to you whether that short lived pain is worth a lifetime of being your own boss.

Here’s the switch: You have created everything that has ever happened in your life

Doesn’t seem too bad does it?

Where’s the pain?

Well, if you can bring yourself to accept this, to flip this switch, it means that every time you have ever lost a job, every time a friendship went sour, every bad experience you have had was your doing.

Your financial situation is your doing.

The state of your relationships is your doing.

Every time you have ever been taken advantage of was your doing.

Now if you are like a lot of people, the automatic reaction is to defend yourself and start blaming other people, the economy, or bad luck for the bad stuff that’s happened.

That’s normal. That puts you in with the vast majority of folks today.

I don’t blame you a bit if you can’t accept this. Not many people can.

But like I said before, the pain is short-lived.

You see, every decision you make creates something. It causes something to happen. Some decisions create outcomes that you like and some that you don’t like. If you are aware of this process, then you can make decisions that create an outcome you like

What about other people? It’s true that other people are making decisions in their lives too, and those impact yours, but you must remember that no one can make you do anything

They may use positive or negative methods to try to motivate you to do something, but they can’t make you do it

No one can make you mad or make you do dumb things you’ll regret.

You are in control of you, and you alone can decide how you will react to the decisions of others.

What about luck?

Good luck happens.

Bad luck happens.

Good luck happens most often to people who are have put themselves in a position to take advantage of it.

Bad luck happens most often to people who put themselves in a vulnerable position.

You can’t control luck, but you have a huge amount of power over whether luck can control you.

Think about a person who is late to work a lot. They believe it was the fault of the traffic, the fault of their kids who ate breakfast too slowly, the bad luck to have lost their keys, and on and on. If you told them that they were responsible for being late to work most days, they’d probably blow up at you. And yet other people who work at the same place can manage to make it there early each day.

You have created all the parts of your life.

Now after all this heavy miserable stuff, there is a nice payoff.

Since you have created all the parts of your life … you can create any or all of them in any other way you please

By looking at your decisions as building blocks to different outcomes, you can consciously build something different, set yourself up to be ready when good luck comes along, and insulate yourself against the most bad luck.

I know this sounds great, but hey, it’s hard to flip the switch. It’s so much easier to go on blaming others for the things that happen in your life. It’s more comfortable because you never have to feel bad for making mistakes.

You can just delegate those out.

But before you decide to take that nice wide comfy path, remember that whoever is responsible for your life, controls your life

If your spouse of your kids can make you mad, then you have handed them the power to control whether or not you are a happy person.

If the economy, or luck, or a bad boss, is the reason that you work a job you hate, then those factors control whether your situation will ever be any better.

Your future is completely at the mercy of whoever wants to push you around.

That’s a rough price to pay for the ability to blame others for your mistakes.

You will make mistakes, you will make bad decisions, but if you can flip the switch and accept the responsibility for the good and bad things that happen, once you get used to guiding your life rather than being blown around, you will never want to give that up.

After all, you can get spoiled on having power over your own life!

(Oh yeah, and every mistake you’ve ever made, you get to call an “educational experience” so that’s kinda fun too.)
